Thomas Sowell's "Basic Economics" is also a good read, interesting and easy to comprehend. My high school economics class was virtually pointless. I believe a separation of school and state would significantly help the "Ultimate Cause." It wasn't until taking micro in college (non-public) where I had an excellent professor that I developed an interest and saw how it applied virtually everywhere in the real world. Sadly, far too many politicians are corrupt and driven by ideology rather than an honest quest for truth and solutions.

Gus, that line uncommented in step 7 is simply including the file that is edited in the next step, so this must mean there is an error in the next step, 8.

Thanks for the great guide very clear for a beginner. Just one question about installing phpmyadmin. When I uncommented the line:
Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf
it didn't work (i just got a browser page not found). But it works when I DO comment out the line, contrary to your instructions. Why could that be?

(am using snow leopard).

Jonathan,

Thank you for commenting. I see your point and can't really disagree about how hard documentation is to create and maintain. My bad for down playing the effort.

I'd be glad to help with the documentation project. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to open source contributing though so I wouldn't try to lead the effort.

Off the cuff, I'd recommend copying the process and tools that PHP is using. That doc is awesome for most pieces although I have noticed some extensions getting a little short changed on documentation even there - supporting your point about open source documentation in general.

Cheers,
Roger

peter, edit the existing one.

Btw, since I wrote this I became a fan of macports (http://www.macports.org/). Now use that system for installing PHP, MySQL, etc. Installations are easier to manage with macports but you have to look for all their files in /opt/local rather than the default directories.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

The definitive guide to symfony was a great reference for sf1.0, but I think it won't be updated for 1.3/1.4. Too bad indeed.

Lets see if we get a definitive guide to sf2.0 book.

BTW I love the framework too.

I agree with you except for where you said, "is so much easier to fix than developing the framework in the first place". I really disagree. Keeping the documentation up-to-date and complete is probably the hardest thing to do in an open source project. Especially to be the ones who are writing the software AND the documentation. I think in other projects/languages the documentation has much more contributors providing help. We don't have so much right now and it is very difficult to keep things in sync as the projects move forward at a rapid pace.

If it were so easy, then someone would already be doing it. Especially when we don't have anybody contributing. Maybe you can help?

P.s. Here's the exact quote from that engineering process document:
"Do not multitask. Work on the highest severity CR [change request] until it is blocked. Blocked means you have to wait on someone else (a customer, manager, vendor, etc.). When a manager is available, discuss with manager before beginning a new CR so that most current company priorities are considered."
